tonight, during an 8:00pm et/pt telecast, the american music awards will honor mariah carey with an award of acheivement. only the third of its kind to be given out—the other two went to michael jackson and prince—the award recognizes special acheivement in the music industry. among the accopmlishment's that have made carey eligible for this award are being the only female to have ever acheived number one status every year in single decade (and the only person to ever do it since the inception of the rock era), having three of her single enter the charts in the number one position and having sold more records in the 1990s than any other female artist (yes, including celine dion). the award will be presented to carey by fellow pop diva olivia newton john on abc.
