diva n. (pl. divas) a great or famous woman singer; deity; goddess.

welcome to [DiVAstation], your comprehensive internet guide to the world of female singers. even after reading the definition above, you might still be asking yourself, "what is a diva?". a diva is many different things to many different people. recently, the media has taken to calling any female singer with a bit of moxie a diva. prior to that, though, one had to prove herself worthy of the title.

in my opinion, to tag every wet-behind-the-ears siren "diva" is a bit generous and dilutes the original meaning of the word. women like patti labelle, aretha franklin, tina turner and gladys knight have earned their place in diva-dom by selling millions of albums, repeatedly filling concert halls and, most importantly, standing the test of time; in doing so, such women have paved the way for today's up-and-coming divas. i also take exception to those who use the term to indicate a woman in the music industry who is overly agressive or bossy. again, i don't feel that definition captures the original intent of what it is to be a diva and, in some cases, appears to be a result of the patriachy's imperative to keep strong women down.

however you define a diva, this site will focus on a panorama of female singers—from those who have proven themselves worthy to those who are just starting out on the road to the divine. you will find pictures, bios, news and reviews of some of your favorite female singers. and, hey, who knows, maybe when i learn enough html, there'll even be videos and soundclips!
